Samsung Galaxy S8 Launches: All You Need to Know

Finally, after a lot of wait, Samsung has officially unvieled the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ at its Unpacked 2017 event. Both the smartphones will be available for buying starting April 21. Moreover, the smartphones will be available in Midnight Black, Arctic Silver, Orchid Gray,Coral Blue and Maple Gold colours.

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung at the event displayed how Samsung Galaxy S8 is the “start of the new era”. Samsung came out with pretty cool specifications and features on the smartphones to check out. Here is the list:

Bixby Virtual Assistant 

At the event, the company showcased its home made voice-based virtual assistant named Bixby. The competitors of this virtual assistant are Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft Cortana. Bixby can perform various tasks like sending your location to your contact, taking a screenshot etc just by speaking.

IRIS Scanner

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will come with IRIS scanner which was earlier seen on Samsung Galaxy Note 7(discontinued). As the name says, the biometric recognition scans the IRIS to unlock the smartphone and do much more. There is also Facial recognition scanner which users can use to unlock the smartphone.Moreover, both the smartphones come with fingerprint scanner at the back of the smartphone for faster unlocking.

Samsung DeX

The company has also announced with Microsoft like feature, Samsung DeX, which will help to use smartphone like a computer by attaching it to the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

The DeX dock supports monitor connection via HDMI, and has mouse, keyboard and two USB port support system. It is a nice feature that the company has come out with.

New Gear 360

Samsung has also come up with its New Gear 360 which was unvieled at the same event. The device also shoots a perfect 4K 360-degree videos. Moreover, it also shoots 15 Mega-Pixel photos.It is also compatible with other smartphones like the iPhone. It also has the feature to support the New Gear VR and controller. There is also New Gear VR and Controller launched at the event.

Specifications and Price

Samsung Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch QHD+ (1440×2960 pixels) Super AMOLED Display and S8+ 6.2-inch QHD+(1440×2960 pixels) Super AMOLED display. The company says these as Infinity Displays.The displays comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection. Both the smartphones comes with 12 Mega-Pixels ‘Dual Rear Camera Setup’ with Optical Image Stabilisation(OIS) with f/1.7 aperture. There is also an 8 Mega-Pixels Front camera with autofocus and f/1.7 aperture for shooting beautiful selfies.

Both the smartphones have power driven by Octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset(2.3GHz Quad + 1.7GHz Quad) in the US, while many other regions including India will get Company’s Exynos 8895(2.35GHz Quad + 1.9GHz Quad) chipset. Both the smartphones have 4GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage(expandable via MicroSD card up to 256GB).

Both the smartphones comes with wireless charging and fast charging feature. The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with 3000mAh battery and S8+ comes with 3500mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S8 weighs 155 grams and is just 8mm thick while the Samsung Galaxy S8+ weighs 173 grams and is 8.1mm thick.

Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB Type-C etc. Sensors include ambient light sensor, magnetometer, heart rate sensor, proximity sensor etc. Both the smartphones are water and dust resistant with IP68 certification. The smartphones comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with company’s own UI. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ comes with excellent quality earphones by AKG by Harman. The earphones are made with anti-tangle material.

Although, Samsung did not announce the price of both the smartphones at the event but the prices of US Carrier has been obtained by The Verge. The starting price tag by Verizon Wireless offers Samsung Galaxy S8 at $720(Around Rs.47,000) while S8+ has a starting price of $840(Around Rs.55,000).
